The Hillsdale College men's track and field team held on to second place on the second day of the 2026 G-MAC Outdoor Championships on Thursday, as the Chargers saw two more athletes earn medals in a strong performance.
Competing on their home track, the Jim and Sallie McGinnis Track and Field Facility at Hayden Park, the Chargers got another epic performance from legendary senior
Ben Haas. Already a repeat G-MAC Champion in the hammer throw on Wednesday, Haas broke his own Hillsdale school record in the shot put with a throw of 18.35 meters to repeat as the G-MAC Outdoor shot put champion as well. That throw also improved Haas' provisional qualifying mark in the shot put, moving him up to fifth in NCAA DII at this point in the season, and now ranking him in the top five in two events ahead of the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships in May.
Along with Haas' continued excellence, Hillsdale got a breakthrough race from freshman
Jefferson Regitz in the 3,000m steeplechase, as the freshman ran a personal best by eight seconds to take runner-up honors with a time of 9:10.18 on Thursday night. Regitz' time ranks him 10th all-time in Hillsdale history in the steeplechase, and is also the freshman's first NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark, ranking him 37th in NCAA DII in the event. Regitz's teammate,
Zach Self, also scored for the Chargers with an eighth place finish in the steeplechase in 9:31.26.
Hillsdale's men's team also set itself up for Friday's action in preliminary races, advancing runners in three events to Championship Friday. Senior
Ross Kuhn led the advancing athletes by posting the second fastest time in qualifying for the 800m run, 1:52.24, while two freshmen also advanced for the Chargers in the 1,500m run in
John Richardson (3:58.19) and
Henry Thuet (3:59.46).
The Chargers'
Zealand Tarrant ran a new personal best in the 400m hurdles to advance, 54.16, a time that moves him up to seventh in Hillsdale College history in the event, and teammate
Colsen Conway also advanced to the finals in the 400m hurdles in 55.79.
Hillsdale now has 53 points through eight of 21 events. The Chargers will look to continue to add to their total and better their seventh place finish from 2025 on Championship Friday, where champions in the final 13 events of the meet will be determined. Field events will start at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow, and running events at 12:10 p.m.
