Scharer named Freshman of the Year; three Chargers earn All-G-MAC Outdoor Track and Field honors

2026 G-MAC Outdoor Track and Field Awards

The Hillsdale College men's track and field team brought home one of the major awards and had strong representation on the G-MAC All-Conference Outdoor Track and Field teams for the 2026 season, revealed on Thursday afternoon.

Hillsdale's Dominic Scharer was named the conference's Freshman of the Year for the 2026 outdoor season, completing a sweep of the Freshman of the Year honors for the G-MAC after winning the same award for the indoor season earlier in the winter. Scharer had an impressive campaign in his first season for the Chargers, finishing third place in the discus at the G-MAC Championships at the end of April, and placing 10th in the nation in the hammer throw at the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships in May. Scharer finished 2026 ranked fourth all-time in Hillsdale history in the hammer throw with a mark of 62.90 meters, and ranked seventh all-time in the discus with a throw of 49.73 meters.

Three other Chargers earned All-G-MAC recognition for their performances at the G-MAC Championships in April and May. Senior Ben Haas was named to the first team, his sixth All-G-MAC honor between indoor and outdoor track and field, after winning G-MAC titles in the hammer throw (67.46 meters) and shot put (18.35 meters) this season. Haas is one of the most decorated athletes in G-MAC history, with three national titles and eight All-American honors, and he graduated this spring as the program record holder in both the hammer throw (69.28 meters) and the shot put.

He's joined on the first team by sophomore Thomas Flud, who earned his spot for the Chargers with a title in the javelin throw. Flud won the javelin championship with a mark of 56.70 meters, capturing the second G-MAC title of his career, and is Hillsdale's school record holder in that event, with a top throw of 62.80 meters.

Freshman Jefferson Regitz also earned a spot on the All-G-MAC second team for the Chargers, taking runner-up in the 3,000m steeplechase at the G-MAC Outdoor Championships. Regitz' time in that race of 9:10.18 earned himself a spot in the top 10 all-time in Hillsdale history in the steeplechase, and puts him in strong position to challenge for the title in the future with three more years of eligibility.
