A strong first set that saw the Chargers pull out a 25-23 victory wasn't enough for the Hillsdale College volleyball team, as visiting Ashland took the next three sets to down Hillsdale in four in a match in Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena on Saturday.
That first set was back and forth, but Hillsdale led for much of it, and the Chargers used a 6-0 run to turn a 20-18 deficit into a 23-20 advantage and take the victory.
Caroline Lanicek had two kills and a block during that run, and
Hannah Baker added back-to-back kills as well. In total, the Charger hit .244 with 15 kills in a solid offensive performance in set one.
Hillsdale started strong again in set two, leading 12-10, but an 8-0 run by Ashland saw the Eagles turn the set on its head, and flip momentum in the match in a way that ended up being permanent. The Eagles evened up the match with a 25-17 victory, then had big runs in both sets three and four to take 25-17 and 25-15 wins and the match.
Ashland outhit Hillsdale .236 to .110 thanks to a strong attack and also a great block. The Eagles rejected 15 Charger kill attempts for a big edge in that stat and one that played a huge role in the outcome of the match.
Taylor Cook continued to be a leader for Hillsdale offensively, with 13 kills and six digs, while
Ellie Fles chipped in eight kills, 12 digs and three total blocks, and
Molly Kennedy added seven kills and two total blocks as well.
Chloe Pierce finished with 21 digs defensively to lead the Chargers,
Madison Peal added 12 digs and
Grace Drake chipped in 34 assists, 13 digs, three total blocks and two service aces at setter for the Chargers.
Hillsdale (5-7, 1-3 G-MAC) continues a long homestand next weekend and will look to get right with a match against Kentucky Wesleyan at 7 p.m. on Friday up next.
