A dominant serving performance helped Hillsdale sweep past visiting Thomas More and get back to .500 in the G-MAC in a home match on Saturday.
Hillsdale served up 12 aces and turned several more tough serves into over-pass kills to overwhelm the Saints in a 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 victory.
It wasn't just one player dealing behind the service line for the Chargers in the win, as
Chloe Pierce,
Madison Geer and
Ella Vandermark each finished with three aces in the match.
Ella Byrum,
Madison Peal and
Grace Drake each added an ace as well.
Hillsdale's serving success gave them Chargers a significant advantage as Thomas More had just three aces and committed 11 service errors as well. That was a major difference in a match where the Chargers had just a .219 to .189 edge in hitting percentage.
What was a tight first set turned heavily on a long run at the service line by
Madison Geer, who anchored a 7-0 run that turned an 18-16 lead into a commanding 24-16 edge on the way to a 25-17 victory. Geer served the third of three service aces in the set during that run, and
Taylor Brownsword also added three kills.
Set two was tighter but two late service errors by the Saints allowed Hillsdale to build a narrow edge, along with a kill from
Ella Vandermark and Brownsword to pull out a 25-21 victory.
The Chargers put Thomas More away in set three thanks to another 7-0 run, this time driven by Vandermark, who served up three aces in the stretch to help Hillsdale run to a 25-17 victory.
Ellie Fles led the Chargers offensively with 10 kills and three total blocks,
Taylor Brownsword chipped in eight kills and
Taylor Cook added six in another balanced day for Hillsdale.Â
Chloe Pierce led the Chargers defensively with 10 digs to go with her three aces, while
Madison Peal chipped in nine.
Grace Drake recorded 34 assists as the setter for the Chargers and added six digs and three total blocks as well.Â
Hillsdale improved to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the G-MAC with a sweep of the weekend. Next up for the Chargers is a critical road trip, the start of seven matches away from Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena over the next three weeks. The trip starts with a showdown against rival and North Division leader Findlay at 7 p.m. on Friday, with the Chargers looking to make up ground in the standings as the season approaches the halfway point.
