A strong showing by the Hillsdale College men's cross country team resulted in a fifht-place finish at the Greater Lousiville Open Saturday morning in Kentucky.
Hillsdale totaled 266 points, the second-highest placing Division II program in the 36-team field. Oakland University was the meet champion with a miniscule 52 points. The Golden Grizzlies placed five runners in the top 17 overall.
Grand Valley State was the only D-II school to finish ahead of Hillsdale, with 115 points. Kentucky took third, followed by the University of Detroit.
Junior captain Joseph newcomb was the Chargers' top runner, finishing 12th overall with a time of 25:10.37 on a chilly, windy day in Louisville. He finished just two spots behind Grand Valley State's Torben Hoffmeyer, who was the best Division II runner at the meet.
Anthony Wondaal was 25th overall at 25:31.4, and Caleb Gatchell was the Chargers' third-place runner, with a time of 25:55.07. Luke Daigneault and Isaac Harris rounded out the scorers for Hillsdale.
The team will host the Michigan Intercollegiates Friday afternoon at Hillsdale College's Hayden Park.
