Men's Tennis Team Makes Debut at ITA Regionals

Results

The Hillsdale College men's tennis team made its return to varsity action during a long three-day ITA Regional, hosted by Grand Valley State University.

The regional format pits players against one another individually, rather than as one team versus another. In this format, a pair of Chargers turned in strong collegiate debuts.

Sophomore Dugan Delp participated in the "A" draw, pitting the best players in the region against one another. He opened play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brendan Peterson of Lewis, then won in the round of 32, 6-0, 2-6, 10-5 over Southern Indiana's Roman Laga. Delp ended up falling int he round of 16 to A. Huertas Del Pino of Indianapolis, who is a finalist in the entire field.

Delp and Justin Hyman lost in the first round of the A doubles flight to McKendree, and lost to future G-MAC foe Davis & Elkins in the doubles consolation.

Head coach Keith Turner said the players made a good account of themselves in their first competition.

"It was a great experience for the team," Turner said. "For having seven guys that have never played a college match before I thought we had some solid results."

In the "B: draw, freshman John Ciraci was a straight-sets winner over Christian Henderson of Walsh 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round, and followed that up with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-7 win over Aaron Barris of Southern Indiana.

Ciraci advanced to the draw quarterfinals with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 win over Ross Price of McKendree before losing to Paul Forichon of Southern Indiana.
