The longest winning streak in four years continued for the Charger volleyball team Saturday afternoon in a match that went several different directions.
Hillsdale improved to 10-1 on the season with a 3-0 sweep of host Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie. The Chargers are 4-0 in GLIAC play with all four wins coming on the road.
Hillsdale tore through the Lakers in the match's first two sets, winning by scores of 25-12 and 25-6, the second set being its most decisive set win this year. But in set three, LSSU improved its play and it appeared the match was going to require at least a fourth set.
The Lakers led 22-15, needing just three points to tighten the match to a 2-1 margin. But Hillsdale rediscovered the form that allowed it to dominate the first two sets, and finished set three on an 11-2 run. A kill by Haylee Booms and two kills by Emily Wolfert got the match-ending run started.
Wolfert has been incredibly efficient from her middle hitter position all season, and Saturday was no different. She led the Chargers with 11 kills, hit .474 and picked up 5 block assists. Hillsdale hit .403 as a team, while holding LSSU to a team hitting percentage of .035 for the match.
Booms put together her second straight error-less match, this time going for 8 kills while hitting a season-best .727. Freshman Taylor Bennett delivered a career-high 3 service aces for the Chargers.
Senior Marissa Owen, who expertly directed the offense all weekend, had 25 assists with 4 digs and 2 aces. Senior Jenalle Beaman led the defense with 9 digs.
