It was a successful return to the home court for the Hillsdale College men's tennis team.
After 14 years being dormant, the program is back to varsity status this spring and Saturday afternoon played its first home match since 2002. The wait was worth it.
Hillsdale recorded a 9-0 victory over visiting Daemen College at the Margot V. Biermann Athletic Center to improve to 1-1 on the season.
All six singles players won their matches in straight sets, with none of the sets ever reaching 6-4. Each of the team's players recorded their first-ever collegiate singles flight victory in this match.
Freshman Justin Hyman led the way at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Sophomore Dugan Delp took home a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles.
Gianpiero Placidi was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles, while John Ciraci earned a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 4 singles. Zach Rabitoy won his first collegiate match 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, and Jerry Hewitt finished off the sweep with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.
Delp and Hyman, who each have sisters on the Charger women's tennis team, joined forces at No. 1 doubles, and came away with an 8-2 win. Placidi and Ciraci were the No. 2 doubles team, and were 8-5 winners. Hewitt and Rabitoy teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
