The Charger volleyball team got a festive homecoming weekend off to a good start Friday night, defeating Ohio Dominican University 3-1 at the Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena.
Hillsdale is now 8-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
The Chargers looked impressive in most phases of the game through the match's first two sets, beating the Panthers 25-17 and 25-21. But in set 3, ODU displayed some impressive defensive skills, digging up balls and converting them into points in a 25-20 win over the Chargers.
But in set 4, Hillsdale executed better on its end and wore down the Panthers to the tune of a 25-17 decision, wrapping up the win.
The Chargers held the Panthers to hitting percentages below .200 in each of the three sets it won. ODU turned some sprawling defense into a .298 hitting percentage in the third set, making a difference in extending the match beyond a sweep.
Hillsdale effectively spread its offense around thanks to good decision-making by sophomore setter Taylor Bennett. She had 38 assists, and five players had 5 or more kills for the Chargers.
Leading the way offensively was sophomore Kara Vyletel, who delivered a team-high 14 kills. She racked up another double-double, piling up 13 digs for Hillsdale. Junior Jackie Langer absolutely crushed some kills in this win and finished with 12, while sophomore Paige VanderWall added 9 to go along with a season-high 10 digs.
Freshman libero Taylor Wiese was active and accurate from the back line, and led all players in the match with 19 digs. Senior Erin Holsinger added 8 kills and 4 solo blocks for Hillsdale.
