Deficits are usually difficult to overcome in the sport of volleyball, due to the nature of the scoring in the sport.

Two big deficits were no problem Tuesday night for the Hillsdale College volleyball team.

The Chargers rallied impressively in the first and third sets of Tuesday's key GLIAC North Division matchup with Northwood University, and finished with a 3-0 victory over the Timberwolves at Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena.

Hillsdale, winners of three straight, is now 10-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

In set 1, Hillsdale trailed 10-5 early on, but did a better job of playing in-system from that point on. The Chargers outscored the Timberwolves 20-12 for the remainder of the set, thanks in large part to 7 first-set kills from junior Jackie Langer.

Set 2 was all Hillsdale, as the Chargers played a smooth set from the first point on, topping Northwood 25-16.

Set 3 started much like the first set, with Northwood improving on its passing and serve receiving from the second set. The Timberwolves built a 16-9 lead, but the Chargers gathered themselves and slowly chipped away at the lead. The final score of the set was 25-20, meaning Hillsdale closed out the match on a 17-4 run.

Sophomore Paige VanderWall had four quick kills to get the run started, and she finished with a team-high 12 kills, to go along with a .375 hitting percentage. Langer finished with 11 kills and 11 digs, and played some dynamite defense on some extended rallies in the second and third sets.

Sophomore Kara Vyletel and senior Erin Holsinger each delivered 9 kills, with Holsinger hitting an impressive .421 in the match. Sophomore Taylor Bennett improved on her GLIAC-leading assist numbers with 37 in the victory.

Freshman libero Taylor Wiese kept up her steady improvement with a team-best 18 digs for the Chargers.
