Chargers sweep Thomas More, improve to 5-0 in G-MAC play

The Hillsdale College volleyball team made quick work of the G-MAC South division leaders to cap an undefeated three-match homestand on Saturday, rolling past visiting Thomas More 25-19, 25-18, 25-12 to remain undefeated in G-MAC play.

Hillsdale seized control of a competitive first set with seven of the last nine points to pull away, getting kills from three different players as well as an ace by senior Amanda Hilliker to close out the set. The next two sets were never in doubt, as Hillsdale jumped out to big early leads in both and never let the Saints back in.

The Chargers rode a second-straight efficient hitting performance to victory on Saturday, following up a strong Friday night performance with 37 kills on .271 hitting while holding Thomas More to just .041 on attacks. Hillsdale also had a strong day at the service line, with eight aces, to help fuel the victory.

Senior Marilyn Popplewell had another excellent all-around game to lead the Chargers, finishing with 10 kills, 10 digs, five service aces and a solo block in another huge performance. Fellow senior Maizie Brown also had a good afternoon, with eight kills and three total blocks, while fellow middle hitters Sydney Sahr and Adi Sysum each chipped in five kills apiece as well.

Hilliker led the Chargers defensively with 17 digs as well as two service aces, while senior Lauren Passaglia had 15 assists, three block assists and six digs as well. Junior Josie TeSlaa also chipped in 14 assists.

Hillsdale is now 10-1 overall, 5-0 in the G-MAC and heads into a critical road week. The second-place team in the North Division and likely Hillsdale's top challenger for the G-MAC title, Findlay, hosts the Chargers at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, with another tough team waiting in the wings on Saturday in Tiffin. Wins over both would give Hillsdale a massive advantage in the race for the G-MAC's top tournament seed as conference play reaches the halfway point, while losses would open the door for a variety of teams to enter the title race in the second half.
