Just two days after beating Saginaw Valley State at home in its home opener, the Hillsdale College men's basketball team hit the road and got a convincing win over the Cardinals on Sunday, 92-70, to complete the home-and-home sweep.
Hillsdale scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed past the 12 minute mark of the first half, outscoring the Cardinals 34-17 over the final 12 minutes of the opening period to take a 14 point lead into halftime. With a significant advantage, the Chargers didn't let up in the second half, quickly pushing the lead to 23 points before cruising to the finish.
For the second-straight outing to open the season, Hillsdale was red-hot from 3-point range, shooting 10 for 18 from deep, a 55.6% clip, to blow the game open. The Chargers also took advantage of SVSU's foul trouble at the free throw line, hitting 24 of 29 in the contest to punish the Cardinals for putting them there.
Hillsdale's great night offensively was aided heavily by balanced scoring, as five Chargers finished in double figures and seven players had seven or more points. Sophomore post
CJ Yarian led the way with a huge game off the bench, hitting his first six shots from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and finishing with a career-high 19 points. Yarian also chipped in 11 points for his first collegiate double-double, and added two steals and two blocked shots as well.
Senior
Charles Woodhams also knocked down three 3-pointers to finish with 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists, junior
Ashton Janowski had a second-straight game with five or more assists and chipped in 13 points, and
Joe Reuter and
Eric Radisevic each finished with 11 points as well for the Chargers. Redshirt freshman
Logan Beaston stayed hot from 3-point range with nine points, all on 3-pointers, as well for the Chargers.
Hillsdale cleaned up on the boards against SVSU, outrebounding the Cardinals 42-30, and assisted on 18 of their 29 made baskets while committing just nine turnovers.
The Chargers are now 2-0 overall and will be back at home on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. contest against East-West University out of Chicago.
