The 2024-25 indoor track and field season isn't even a week old, and already two Hillsdale College men's stars have put forth record-setting performances that mark them as legitimate national title contenders down the road.
Cass Dobrowolski and
Ben Haas opened their indoor seasons in the best way possible at the Findlay Opener on Friday night, each shattering a school record and posting a mark that all but locks them into the field for the 2025 NCAA DII Indoor Championships in March in Indianapolis.
Dobrowolski broke a 31-year old Hillsdale record in the high jump with a clearance of 2.20 meters -- seven feet, two and a half inches -- to win the title. Hillsdale's indoor record was held jointly by Dan Gifford, who first set it in 1981, and NAIA National Champion Jim McHugh in 1993. By clearing the height, Dobrowolski became the first high jumper in program history to clear 2.20 period, either indoor or outdoor.
The mark makes Dobrowolski, a two-time outdoor national meet qualifier whose previous best height was 2.14 meters, a contender in the hunt for the 2025 NCAA DII high jump title. 2.19 meters won the national championship indoors in 2024, and 2.20 would have tied for the fourth best jump period in the 2023-24 season by a NCAA DII high jumper indoors.
Haas also had a massive personal best to break a school record at the Findlay Opener, though this time the record Haas felled was his own. The junior became the first Hillsdale thrower to surpass 22 meters in the weight throw with a mark of 22.12 meters on Friday, a big improvement on Haas' old record of 21.88 meters. A two-time All-American in the weight throw already, the throw could make Haas the top seed at the 2025 NCAA DII Indoor Championships as the only two competitors last season to exceed 21 meters in competition besides Haas both graduated.
In addition to his record-setting mark in the weight throw, Haas also took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 15.59 meters as well. Teammate
Isaac Doughty also placed in the weight throw for the Chargers with a personal-best throw of 17.64 meters.
On the track for Hillsdale at the Oiler Opener,
Colsen Conway took third in the 60m hurdles with a solid opening race, finishing in 8.61 seconds.
The Chargers also had two placers in the 60m dash, with senior
Jamahl Burke placing fifth in a personal best time of 7.05, and freshman
Sam Jones taking sixth in 7.08. Jones also placed sixth in the 200m dash with a time of 22.99 in an impressive debut meet.
Freshman
Hudson Moorefield took eighth in the 400m dash as well for the Chargers, in 53.23.
Hillsdale now heads into training over the winter break, and will pick back up on January 18 in th new year at the Hoosier Horsepower Classic in Indianapolis for its next action.
