A near-perfect performance that led to an upset win on the road has sophomore quarterback
Colin McKernan bringing home a conference honor.
The Great Midwest Athletic Conference announced on Monday afternoon that McKernan has been named the G-MAC Offensive Player of the Week for his play in Hillsdale College's 23-20 win at Walsh this past Saturday. The honor is Hillsdale's third weekly football conference honor of the season, and the first of McKernan's career.
McKernan was near-flawless for the Chargers on Saturday, completing a career-best 23 of 28 passes for 242 yards and three passing touchdowns, including a two-yard throw to
Andrew Konieczny, a 24-yard scoring pass to
Shea Ruddy and a 48-yard touchdown throw to
Tutt Carrico. His 82% completion percentage and scoring threat helped Hillsdale jump out to a 23-10 third quarter lead and eventually earn the victory at Walsh, which entered the game at 6-3 overall and was favored to beat the Chargers at home.
In his second year as starting quarterback for Hillsdale, McKernan is putting together an impressive season, bettering his 2024 numbers in nearly every category, including 1,687 passing yards and a 16 to 7 touchdown to interception ratio while completing 60% of his passes. With two seasons of eligibility still to play, he's also closing in on the top 10 all-time in Hillsdale College history in career touchdown passes, just four behind Charger legends Pat Riepma and Anthony Mifsud who are tied for ninth overall with 33.
McKernan and the Chargers will aim to secure a third-straight winning season in the home finale this weekend, as Hillsdale hosts Ohio Dominican at 1 p.m. at Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium.
