A late first half surge helped the Hillsdale College men's basketball team put visiting Andrews University away for good and pick up the Chargers' first win of the season, 89-42, on Wednesday night.
Leading by seven at the eight minute mark in the first half, Hillsdale outscored the Cardinals 26-3 until halftime, turning a game that was still in doubt into a rout. The Chargers knocked down four 3-pointers and got dunks from
Caleb Glaser and
Garrett Bolte in transition during the run as the Chargers turned Andrews over and pushed the pace to get easy baskets at the other end.
Hillsdale continued its dominance in the second half, grabbing 13 offensive rebounds in the final minutes to lead by as many as 50 points. The Chargers were excellent at the defensive end, holding Andrews to just 32.1 % from the floor and 1 of 11 shooting from 3-point range. Strong defense led to offense as Hillsdale scored 18 fast break points and shot 12 of 27 from 3-point range to pull away.
Redshirt freshman
Tommy Morgan had a breakout game in just the third contest of his career, scoring a team-leading 20 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the floor and 4 of 6 from 3-point range in just 19 minutes of action. Big men
Caleb Glaser and
Connor Stonebraker each contributed 13 points off the bench as well for the Chargers, with Glaser just missing a double-double with nine rebounds and Stonebraker grabbing seven boards as well.Â
Garrett Bolte added 11 points and seven rebounds for Hillsdale,
Ashton Janowski chipped in 11 points to give Hillsdale five players in double figures, and
CJ Yarian added eight points and 15 rebounds for the Chargers.
