Hillsdale College men's basketball senior
Ashton Janowski hit one of the biggest clutch shots of his career to lift Hillsdale to victory on Saturday afternoon, burying a pull-up jumper from the top of the key with one second to go to give the Chargers a 74-72 win over visiting Ohio Christian.
The Chargers had just gotten a stop at the other end, forcing Caleb Schmelzer into a tough fadeaway shot with a double team with 10 seconds to go.
Tommy Morgan collected the rebound and got the ball to Janowski on the outlet, who raced to the other end and nailed the pull-up jumper to give Hillsdale the lead. A full-court shot by Ohio Christian on the ensuing inbounds didn't connect and the Chargers got the victory.
Hillsdale had led for almost the entire second half, going up by nine points early in the period on an
Ashton Janowski jumper five minutes in, and led 72-66 with 3:43 to play. Ohio Christian refused to go quietly, knocking down a 3-pointer to cut Hillsdale's lead to one possession, and then getting another basket with 1:55 to go to make it 72-71 Hillsdale. Schmelzer had a chance to give the Trailblazers the lead after being fouled with 57 seconds to play, but hit just one of two free throws to tie up the game and set up a frantic final minute.
The Chargers fell behind the Trailblazers early in the first half, as Ohio Christian proved they weren't going to be an easy opponent to dispatch, but Hillsdale got a big momentum boost when
Cole McWhinnie drew a foul while shooting a 3-pointer eight minutes in. McWhinnie hit all three free throws to give the Chargers the lead, and from there Hillsdale stayed in front for almost all of the remainder of the first half, taking a four-point lead into halftime after McWhinnie buried a buzzer-beating 3-pointer with three-tenths of a second remaining in the half.
Hillsdale shot an impressive 51.7% from the floor in the contest and were 10 of 11 from the foul line, critical in a game where every point mattered. Janowski led the way with 18 points and three assists, while Yarian chipped in 13 points, three rebounds and three assists and
Connor Stonebraker added 10 points off the bench.
Caleb Glaser also played well in reserve for the Chargers, finishing with eight points and seven rebounds, and McWhinnie and Morgan cheach chipped in eight points and two steals as well for Hillsdale.
The Chargers are now 2-2 after the victory today and hit the road next week, traveling to Indianapolis for a road contest on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, at 5 p.m. for their next action.
