Hillsdale junior
Ben Haas added another school record to his growing collection at the Chargers men's track and field team split its squad between Akron and Saginaw Valley State this weekend.
Competing at the Akron Invitational on Friday, Haas shattered Hillsdale's indoor shot put record to win the event, setting a new personal record by nearly a full meter with a throw of 18.67 meters to break the old mark of 17.83 meters set by Nate English in 2012. The mark is not only a school record but the second furthest throw in the nation at the NCAA DII level this season. Haas already has the best mark in the country in the weight throw and has now identified himself as a legitimate contender for not one but two national championships in Indianapolis in March.
Haas also won the weight throw at Akron on Friday with a mark of 21.45 meters, a top-five throw in NCAA DII this season but not an improvement on his division-leading mark from December. Teammate
Isaac Doughty took sixth with a throw of 16.85 meters as well for the Chargers.
The bulk of Hillsdale's squad competed at Saginaw Valley State's Jet Pizza Invite on Saturday, where the Chargers had some solid results in the distance races. In his first 3,000m run of the season,
Richie Johnston finished runner-up for the Chargers in a personal-best time of 8:14.14, a NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark that currently ranks 35th nationally. Hillsdale also had two of the top five finishers in the 5,000m run, as
Nathaniel Osborne took third in a new personal best time of 15:09.60 and
Caleb Youngstedt placed fifth in 15:17.03.
The Chargers now turn their focus to a big meet this coming weekend, the Jud Logan Light Giver Invitational hosted by Ashland. This meet is well attended by some of the top teams in the Midwest and represents Hillsdale's best chance at big personal bests ahead of the G-MAC Championships back in Ashland at the end of February.
