New school record, multiple personal bests as Hillsdale competes at GVSU, Tiffin

The Hillsdale College men's track and field team's performance at the GVSU Big Meet on Friday lived up to the meet name, and the Chargers also impressed at Tiffin on Saturday in a busy weekend of action.

The GVSU Big Meet in Allendale is always one of the best fields in indoor track and field, bringing together the top athletes from the Midwest and beyond, and Hillsdale held its own with numerous solid performances.

Leading the way for the Chargers once again was junior Ben Haas, who broke his own school record set earlier this season in the weight throw with another sensational performance. Haas' marks continue to lead all of NCAA DII in the weight throw, and his new personal best of 22.45 meters towered over a star-studded field that included three of the top five performers in NCAA DII to date. Haas also took second in the shot put behind the defending national champion with a throw of 17.77 meters, a NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark but not an improvement on his previous season best.

Hillsdale added another new provisional mark in the 3,000m run, as senior Richie Johnston took sixth in a crowded field of national contenders in 8:13.88 to improve on his previous personal best and move up to the 49th best mark in the nation. Johnston is within striking distance of Hillsdale's school record of 8:11.98 set by Paul Aufdemberge in 1987.

Two more athletes ran solid personal bests at GVSU for Hillsdale, as Gabriel Phillips ran a PR in the 5K of 15:08.95 and Mark Masaka also PRed in the 800m run in 1:55.04. Both athletes acquitted themselves well against national-level fields.

Hillsdale also had several placers at the Robinson Family Open hosted by Tiffin on Saturday. Senior Cass Dobrowolski, a top contender nationally in the high jump, won the long jump with a new personal best of 6.71 meters, and the Chargers also got an event victory from Connor McCormick in the pole vault, clearing 4.70 meters. Dual-sport athlete Christian Hinrichs, also on the football team, took third in the triple jump as well for Hillsdale, with a new personal best of 12.53 meters, and also placed eighth in the long jump with a mark of 6.03 meters.

On the track, Zealand Tarrant placed second for Hillsdale in the 800m run in 1:59.53 and Charlie Hipkins took sixth in 2:05.70, and Hudson Moorefield placed fifth in the 400m dash in 53.54. Hillsdale had two placers in the mile as freshmen Zach Self and Daniel Johnson took fifth (4:26.86) and sixth (4:29.33) respectively.

Hillsdale now turns its focus to the G-MAC Championships hosted by Ashland on Feb. 28 and March 1. First, the Chargers will play host to one final tune-up meet at home on Feb. 21 to prepare for championship season to follow.
