Box Score A young Hillsdale College men's tennis team took a big step forward on Sunday, coming back from a deficit to beat visiting Edinboro 5-2 for the team's first victory of the spring season.
Hillsdale fell behind 1-0 after losing the doubles point to the Scots, but rallied to take five of the six singles matches and pull off the victory.Â
Sophomores
Ellis Klanduch and
Henry Hammond led the way with a pair of straight sets victories to set the tone for the Chargers. Klanduch won a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Edinboro's Thomas Buchard at No. 2 singles, while Hammond captured a 6-4, 6-4 win over the Scots' Guillermo Rodriguez at No. 5 singles.
Hillsdale also got impressive victories from three freshmen to help secure the victory. Both
Alex Cordero Lopez and
Eddie Bergelin came back from losing first-set tiebreaks, with Lopez taking a 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-4 victory over Fabricio Sosa at No. 3 singles, and Bergelin rallying for a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2 win at over Asen Tabaldyev at No. 4 singles.
Rintaro Goda finished off the win for the Chargers at No. 6 singles with a strong third set performance, pulling out a narrow 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 victory over Edinboro's Gerardo Garrido.
Hillsdale improves to 1-2 with the win, and will be back in action at home next weekend with two matches, starting with a Saturday afternoon contest against in-state foe Davenport at 3 p.m.
