Chargers drop road match to #13 Wayne State, 6-1

Box Score The Hillsdale College men's tennis team put up a fight on Saturday, but it wasn't enough against a nationally ranked Wayne State squad in a 6-1 road loss.

Facing the No. 13 team in the nation and one of the top-ranked teams in the Midwest Region, Hillsdale had some success in singles play, winning a match and forcing three more to third sets against strong Warriors players.

The victor for the Chargers was sophomore Henry Hammond, who won a first-set tiebreak 7-2 on the way to a well-earned 7-6, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles over Wayne State's Sam Knowles.

While Hammond was the only player to put his name in the win column for Hillsdale, several Chargers acquitted themselves well, as freshmen Ryan Papazov at No. 2 singles, Sam Plys at No. 4 singles, and Rintaro Goda at No. 6 singles all pushed their Wayne State counterparts to three sets, and sophomore Ellis Klanduch battled in a tight 4-6, 5-7 loss at No. 1 singles to nationally-ranked Cedric Drenth.

Hillsdale is now 4-5 on the season, and will take the next week off before traveling to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for matches against West Liberty and Millersville in the PTR Spring Tennis Fest beginning on March 11.
