Two of the Hillsdale men's track and field team's most decorated athletes set new season bests and moved up the national lists on Saturday as the Chargers had a strong outing at the Calvin Knight Invite in Grand Rapids.
Leading the way for Hillsdale was senior
Cass Dobrowolski, who won the high jump with a top clearance of 2.14 meters, setting a new provisional mark that ranks fifth in the country at the NCAA DII level. A three-time national meet competitor who's twice appeared in the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships previously, Dobrowolski's jump on Saturday gives him a strong chance to make a fourth national meet trip this May, and allows him to move his focus to challenging the Chargers' outdoor high jump record of 2.19 meters set in 1981.
Dobrowolski already has a clearance of 2.20 meters indoors to break Gifford and Jim McHugh's shared indoor record, and he'll be looking to duplicate that feat outdoors over the final six weeks of the season.
Also improving his standing nationally was junior
Ben Haas, who won the shot put with a mark of 17.30 meters to move up to 19th nationally on the NCAA DII provisional qualifying list. An indoor national champion in the weight throw and a four-time All-American, Haas also won the hammer throw on Saturday with a mark of 65.20 meters and currently has the second best throw in that event in NCAA DII.Â
Haas also is chasing a school record, as his mark today in the shot put was just two centimeters off the school record of 17.32 meters set by Nate English in 2012. Haas already has Hillsdale's school records in the indoor shot put, weight throw, and hammer throw and will look to add a fourth here shortly.
Several other Hillsdale athletes had strong days at the Knight Invite.
Richie Johnston added a third event victory for the Chargers by winning the 1,500m run in 3:55.99, and
Mark Masaka took second in the 800m dash in 1:54.23 and teammate
Ross Kuhn finished fourth in 1:54.70, both personal best times.
Senior
Jamahl Burke was second in the 100m dash in 11.12 and third in the 200m dash in 22.25 as well for Hillsdale, while
Connor McCormick took second in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.60 meters,
John Heyden was second in the shot put behind Haas with a throw of 13.28 meters, and
Jackson Childress was runner-up in the discus with a throw of 48.39 meters.
Among other finishes, Dmitry Ermakov had a strong day with a third place finish in the hammer throw with a personal best throw of 53.48 meters, and another personal best in the discus with a throw of 40.95 meters.
Gabriel Phillips also finished third in the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:55.02 for the Chargers.
The finish at Calvin leads into a big week for Hillsdale, as the Chargers host the revived GINA Relays after a four-year absence at its new outdoor track at Hayden Park. The GINAs have been a centerpiece meet at Hillsdale for decades in the spring, and will make a triumphant return this Thursday and Friday. Leading into the GINAs, Hillsdale also will host its rescheduled Mid-Week Multi meet on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning for decathletes and heptathletes.
