Hillsdale College men's track and field junior
Ben Haas continued his assault on the record books as the Chargers hosted the GINA Relays for the first time on Thursday and Friday at the outdoor track at Hayden Park.
Haas opened on Thursday with a new personal best throw in the hammer throw, winning the event and retaking the top spot in NCAA DII with a mark of 67.21 meters. That throw surpasses Haas' previous school record throw of 66.58 meters set just two weeks prior, and is the seventh-best hammer mark in Great Midwest Athletic Conference history.
On Friday, Haas added a second school record by winning the shot put with a mark of 17.84 meters, moving up to eighth in NCAA DII in the event and surpassing the previous outdoor record of 17.32 meters set by Nate English in 2012. It's Haas' fourth school record, as the 2025 Indoor national champion in the weight throw also holds the record in that event, as well as the indoor shot put.
Haas' senior teammate,
Cass Dobrowolski, also had an excellent meet for the Chargers, winning the high jump with a clearance of 2.12 meters, a provisional mark but short of his season best, and also taking the triple jump title with a personal best and new provisional mark of 14.73 meters. Dobrowolski's jump ranks 29th in NCAA DII and is within striking distance of Hillsdale's outdoor school record of 15.07 meters held by Ty Etchemendy.
Senior
Ross Kuhn gave Hillsdale a fifth provisional mark at the GINA Relays by winning the 1,500m run in 3:47.34, a new personal best and also under a second from Hillsdale's school record in the event held by Kurt Knueve. Kuhn led a 1-2 finish for the Chargers in the event, as
Richie Johnston took second in 3:55.20.
Hillsdale won three more events in the two-day meet.
Gabriel Phillips led a 1-2-3 Hillsdale finish in the 3,000m steeplechase to the delight of former head coach Bill Lundberg, who was honored just before the event as he retires from teaching at Hillsdale College this spring. Phillips finished first in 9:29.54,
Zach Self took second in a personal best time of 9:39.38, and
Daniel Johnson took third in a personal best time of 10:06.65.
The Chargers had two more event champions.
Jamahl Burke won the 400m dash in 48.53, while freshman
Hudson Moorefield took sixth in 51.71, while
Connor McCormick won the pole vault with a season best clearance of 4.82 meters.
Dmitry Ermakov took second in the hammer throw behind Haas for Hillsdale with a personal best throw of 55.53 meters,
Mark Masaka also set a personal best in the 800m run with a time of 1:53.38 to finish runner-up, and
Jackson Childress took runner-up in the discus with a throw of 46.57 meters.
Emil Schlueter placed third for the Chargers in the 5,000m run in a personal best time of 15:17.15,
Colsen Conway took fourth in the 400m hurdles in 56.11, and
Christian Hinrichs placed fourth in the long jump (6.35 meters) and sixth in the triple jump (12.46 meters).
Prior to GINAs on Wednesday and Thursday, Hillsdale also hosted a Mid-Week multi meet, with
Zealand Tarrant competing in the decathlon and finishing sixth with a personal best score of 4,427 points.
Hillsdale will compete at home again this coming Friday as it hosts a Tune-Up meet, with athletes trying to put down one final good mark before the G-MAC Championships at Ashland the following week.
