Haas breaks hammer throw record at Hillsdale Outdoor Invite

Already a national champion and a multi-time school record holder, junior Ben Haas added another feather to his cap for the Hillsdale College men's track and field team at Saturday's home invitational at Hayden Park.

Haas won the hammer throw competition with a massive personal best of 66.58 meters, breaking the Hillsdale record of 66.39 meters set by Jason Stomps in 2010. The mark also gives Haas the top hammer throw mark at the NCAA DII level so far, signaling to the rest of the nation that the 2025 NCAA DII Indoor Weight Throw champion is going to be a factor in the battle for the hammer throw national title this spring as well.

The junior had a strong day all around, winning the shot put with another NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark of 17.06 meters, currently the 16th best mark in NCAA DII, and also set a new personal best with a runner-up finish in the discus and a mark of 42.65 meters. Dmitry Ermakov finished runner-up for Hillsdale in the hammer throw behind Haas with a personal best mark of 50.31 meters, and John Heyden finished runner-up in the shot put behind Haas with a new collegiate best of 14.50 meters.

Also setting a provisional mark for Hillsdale was high jumper Cass Dobrowolski, a indoor national meet competitor in the event who now ranks ninth outdoors with a clearance of 2.10 meters to win on Saturday. Christian Hinrichs also won the long jump with a mark of 6.32 meters and took second in the triple jump with a mark of 12.48 meters for Hillsdale.

The Chargers also had numerous personal bests on the track. Zach Self won the 3,000m steeplechase with a new personal record of 9:55.56, and Hillsdale went 1-2 in the 1,500m run with Daniel Johnson winning in 4:09.58, a personal record, and Emil Schlueter taking second in 4:10.53. The Chargers also took the top three spots in the 5,000m run, with Donny McArdle and Nathaniel Osborne crossing the line in an identical time of 15:54.05 and McArdle winning in a photo finish. Caleb Youngstedt was third in 15:54.07, just .02 seconds behind the top two.

In the 400m dash, senior Jamahl Burke took first in 49.68 for the Chargers, beating out teammate Hudson Moorefield, who finished runner-up in 51.66, and Seth Jankowski placed runner-up in the 800m run in 1:58.75.

The majority of Hillsdale's athletes will take this weekend off in preparation for the return of the GINA Relays at Hillsdale College on April 17 and 18, the first time in four years Hillsdale's legendary invitational has been held after delays for the construction of the Chargers' new track out at Hayden Park. A small group of Hillsdale's decathletes will compete on Wednesday and Thursday at Hayden Park, however, as Hillsdale hosts a two day, multi-only event on April 9 and 10.
