Chargers hold on to second place at halfway point of 2026 G-MAC/MEC Championships

The second day of the 2026 G-MAC/MEC Championships brought more strong performances for the Hillsdale College women's swimming and diving team, as the Chargers continue to hold second place as a team through Wednesday in Canton, Ohio.

Freshman Avery May led the Chargers with her second runner-up finish of the meet, building off her performance in the 1,000 freestyle on Tuesday night with a second-place performance in the 400 individual medley in 4:31.95. Isabel Ondracek also made the 400 IM A final for the Chargers, placing eighth in 4:50.51, while Lauren Kamp took 10th in 4:46.57 and Rotem Andegeko placed 11th in 4:50.30 in the B final race.

Hillsdale placed three in the A finals of both the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle as well on the night. Freshman Sasha Babenko took third in the 100 fly in 57.04, edging teammate and sophomore Ella Malone who took fourth in 57.05. Malone's time was a personal best and the fourth-fastest time in the event in program history behind Babenko's top mark. Inez McNichols also placed eighth in the 100 fly in 58.21, and Olivia Leathers took 13th in the B final in 1:00.09.

In the 200 freestyle, sophomore Ella Schafer took third in 1:52.90, just missing a repeat G-MAC/MEC title in the event. Close behind was Matilyn Wilhelmsen, who had another strong swim to finish fourth in 1:52.98, the second fastest 200 freestyle time in Hillsdale history behind Schafer's school record. Alyson Early placed eighth for the Chargers in the A final in 1:56.96, while freshman Rylee Harris took 12th in the B final in 1:55.74.

The Chargers capped the night with a runner-up finish in the 400 medley relay, as the team of Babenko, Lauren Kamp, Malone and Schafer finished in 3:52.26 to take second behind the winning team from Findlay.

Hillsdale currently ranks second as a team at the meet's halfway point, trailing Findlay in the standings but with 695 points and a solid lead on third-place Ashland.

The Chargers will be back in the pool at 10 a.m. on Thursday for preliminary races, and Hillsdale will contest finals in the 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 800 freestyle relay at 6:30 p.m. on day three of the G-MAC/MEC Championships.
