Roessner moves up in national 200 rankings as Chargers compete in tune-up meets

With the G-MAC Indoor Championships now less than a week away, the Hillsdale College women's track and field teams used this weekend to make their final preparations for the conference title meet at Ashland.

Hillsdale split its squad, taking a small group of sprinters and jumpers to the Silverston Invitational at the University of Michigan on Friday while having the bulk of its athletes compete at home in the Hillsdale Tune-Up Invite on Saturday.

In Ann Arbor, freshman Anna Roessner shined, setting a new personal best in the 200m dash in 24.24 to take second overall. That time improves her NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark in the event to 22nd in the nation, and is the second fastest time in the event indoors in program history. Roessner, who's ranked sixth in NCAA DII in the 60m dash, also took fifth in that event in a loaded field that included several professional runners with a time of 7.49 that is a provisional qualifying mark, though not an improvement on her best time this season.

Senior Lucy Minning also had a strong day, finishing close behind Roessner in both the 60m dash (sixth, 7.64) and the 200m dash (fourth, 24.67), while senior Anna Lamoreaux ran seasons bests in both the 200m (25.53, eighth place) and 60m (7.95, 10th) as well.

Sophomore Sarah Chappelle ran at both Sliverston and at Hillsdale in the 60m hurdles, taking fourth on Friday in 8.96 meters after running a prelim time of 8.85, and winning the event at Hillsdale on Saturday in 8.83. Chappelle led a Hillsdale sweep of the top five spots in the event on Saturday, with freshman Adella Schmoll placing second in 9.29 and junior Nola Hipkins placing third in a new personal best time of 9.36.

Schmoll was one of the stories of Saturday's meet for the Chargers, as the freshman also won the long jump with a new personal best of 5.44 meters, moving into eighth all-time in the event indoors with that mark, and finishing ahead of Gianna Lodice, who took second with a jump of 4.95 meters.

Hillsdale claimed 10 first place finishes in their home meet on Saturday. The Chargers had a strong day in the throws, with sophomore Amelia Lutz winning the shot put in 15.78 meters and Olivia Newsome taking first in the weight throw with a throw of 18.23 meters, ahead of teammate Tori Tyo who took second with a mark of 18.15 meters.

Also in the field, Katie Kennedy took first for the Chargers in the triple jump with a mark of 10.50 meters, and Baelyn Zitzmann won the high jump with a clearance of 1.58 meters as well for Hillsdale. Behind Zitzmann, Chargers Natalie Spielman and Elaine Kutas took third and fourth, respectively, each setting a new personal best with a clearance of 1.53 meters. In the pole vault, Tara Townsend took runner-up honors with a clearance of 3.72 meters, while freshman Sophia Williams set a new personal best with a clearance of 3.42 meters to finish fifth.

On the track, Hillsdale took the first three spots in the 3,000m run, with Savannah Fraley winning in 10:29.39, freshman Taylor Brodeur in second in 11:00.25 and freshman Taylor Klimp in third in 11:06.01. Both Brodeur and Klimp set new personal bests for the Chargers in that race, as did all three of Hillsdale's top finishers in the 60m dash. Francesca Federici won in 7.82, Johana Krutzik took third in 8.05, and Hipkins placed fourth in 8.26 after running a new PR of 8.25 in the prelim.

Hillsdale also got first place finishes in the 800m dash from junior Megan Roberts, who finished in 2:20.19 to beat out sister Caroline Roberts, who took second in 2:22.19, and from freshman Mavis Banks in the mile run, as Banks won in 5:30.80. Lodice also took second in the 200m dash for Hillsdale in a new personal best time of 27.32, and freshman Jaden Brock took runner-up honors in the 400m run in 1:02.18, also a personal best.

The Chargers next head to Ashland for the first of two championship meets to close out the indoor season. The G-MAC Indoor Championships run over two days and start on Feb. 27, with Hillsdale looking to bring home individual championships and all-conference honors, contend for the team crown, and advance as many athletes as possible to the NCAA DII Indoor Championships in March with new and improved provisional qualifying marks this week.
