Chargers crown three champions; place second as a team at G-MAC Indoor Championships

Saturday was a banner day for the Hillsdale College women's track and field team at the G-MAC Indoor Championships hosted by Ashland, as the Chargers crowned three more individual champions to run their total to five for the weekend, and placed second as a team in the final standings.

Hillsdale's second-place finish was its best at a G-MAC Indoor Championship since 2023, and its 157 points scored were the most in the meet since the Chargers last captured the title in 2021. Only a strong performance by host Ashland, with 179.5 points, kept Hillsdale from claiming the crown.

The Chargers were led on the day by two repeat champions, one who added another title to her total in 2026 with a second victory, and one who defended her crown from 2025.

Sophomore Allison Kuzma, already a champion in the 5K on Friday night, came back on Saturday and rolled to a second title in the 3,000m run, winning in 9:42.82 to beat the field by 13 seconds to the finish line. Kuzma's double-title earned her another honor, as she also was named the G-MAC Women's Track Athlete of the Meet for her performance, her first time winning the award and Hillsdale's first-ever recipient of the honor since joining the G-MAC in the 2017-18 school year. Hillsdale also got a strong race in the event from her teammate, Eleanor Clark, who finished runner-up in 9:55.40 after also placing second behind Kuzma in the 5K for the Chargers.

In the pole vault, meanwhile, Tara Townsend repeated as G-MAC champion with a clearance of 4.03 meters. She was one of three over the bar with no misses at 4.03 meters, and broke the three-way tie by winning a jump off to win the crown for the second straight season. Townsend also won the 2025 G-MAC Outdoor title in the pole vault, making her first in three straight conference competitions in the event.

The Chargers' third G-MAC champion on the day came in the sprints, as freshman Anna Roessner outraced one of the fastest fields in G-MAC history in the 60m dash to win the title in 7.38, just two one-thousandths off her conference record in the event. Roessner also took third in the 200m dash in 24.29, and thanks to both impressive performances was named the G-MAC Women's Freshman of the Meet as well to give Hillsdale two major award-winners on the day. Teammate and senior Lucy Minning also placed in both events to score valuable points for the Chargers, finishing sixth in the 200 with a time of 24.62 and eighth in the 60 with a time of 7.67.

Hillsdale had several other impressive performances on the day to power their strong team finish. The Chargers placed three in the shot put, with Amelia Lutz taking runner-up honors with a throw of 15.67 meters, Sofia Boonzaaijer placing third with a throw of 14.02 meters, and freshman Isabel Rozeveld placing sixth with a 12.91 meter throw, her best of the season in a Charger uniform.

On the track, Hillsdale set a couple of new NCAA DII provisional qualifying marks. Sophomore Sarah Chappelle tied her personal best time of 8.69 to place fourth in the 60m hurdles for Hillsdale, and now is tied for 36th in the nation in the event, and the Chargers' 4x400m relay team took third in 3:49.71, tied for the ninth fastest time in that relay indoors in Hillsdale College history and currently 34th in the nation in the event.

Senior Francesca Federici had a strong final race in the 400m dash, taking fifth in 56.63 to set a new personal best and move into the top 10 all-time in Hillsdale College history, while fellow senior Erika Mogelvang also went out in style in the triple jump, placing sixth with a personal best mark of 10.83 meters that ranks seventh all-time indoors in Chargers history.

Mogelvang also tied with Baelyn Zitzmann to finish fourth in the high jump for the Chargers, with both athletes clearing the bar at 1.62 meters, and sisters Megan and Caroline Roberts placed for Hillsdale in the 800m run, with Megan running a season-best time of 2:15.48 and Caroline running a new personal best of 2:16.03 for the Chargers.

Hillsdale now waits with bated breath for the announcement on Tuesday of the NCAA DII Indoor Championships field, to see how many athletes will travel to Virginia Beach, Virginia to compete for national titles on March 13 and 14. The Chargers have nine athletes in 11 events with a realistic shot of making the field, but will have to wait and see how other championships finish up this weekend to find out how many athletes are going. Hillsdale will post an announcement with qualifiers to the meet on hillsdalechargers.com once the field is finalized on Tuesday.
