Chargers win series over Lincoln Memorial with Sunday split

The Hillsdale College baseball team split a competitive doubleheader on Sunday at Lincoln Memorial, taking two of three from the Railsplitters to head back to Hillsdale at 3-3 overall.

Another big ninth inning carried the Chargers to a 7-3 inning in the first game of the doubleheader. After scoring six in the ninth on Friday in a come from behind victory, the Chargers plated four runs in the ninth in their Sunday win to blow open a 3-3 tie. After a leadoff single by Aaron Jasiak to start the inning, Rocco Tenuta and Ryan Wiehe put the Chargers ahead for good with a pair of RBI singles, and Drew Law added crucial insurance runs with a two-run single later in the inning.

Protecting a four-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, reliever Patrick MacLean struck out two of the five batters he faced and worked around two walks to secure the victory for the Chargers and earn a pitching win.

Hillsdale had led the game early, pulling ahead on a RBI sacrifice fly by Billy Porotsky and a RBI single by Logan Dichler in the top of the second. The Chargers added a third run on a RBI groundout by Will Lehman in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead, but Lincoln Memorial caught up with a run in the fourth and sixth innings to tie up the game entering the final inning.

Jake Figman led Hillsdale at the plate in the win, going 2 for 4 with a double, while Ryan Wiehe also went 2 for 4 and Drew Law had two hits as a substitute batter as well.

Logan McLaughlin was Hillsdale's starter and went five innings with four strikeouts and three walks, while Winston Delp also pitched an inning and struck out one. MacLean finished the final three innings of the game to earn the win, holding Lincoln Memorial scoreless while striking out three and walking three.

The Chargers attempted to sweep the series in the nightcap, but couldn't battle back from an early 5-0 deficit in a 9-4 loss in seven innings. Hillsdale cut into the lead with a RBI single by Gaard Swenson and a sacrifice fly by Jake Figman in the top of the third, and Ryan Wiehe brought Hillsdale within one run, 5-4, with a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning. The Railsplitters answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, however, and pulled away for good with two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Carson Tucker and Aaron Jasiak each finished with two hits to lead the Chargers at the plate, and Nolan Coppens chipped in a double as well for Hillsdale. Isaac Scavarda took the loss on the mound for Hillsdale, starting and going two innings, while Nate Albanese, Collin Lange and Jeff Klominek all pitched in relief for the Chargers in the loss.

Now 3-3 overall, Hillsdale returns home and will take the next two weeks off, before returning to action with a neutral site series in Marion, Illinois against nationally-ranked regional foe Grand Valley State. The four-game series with the Lakers kicks off with a single nine inning game on Friday, Feb. 27.
