Kuzma shatters school record, rolls to dominant first national title at NCAA DII Indoor Championship

The Hillsdale College women's track and field program has produced several legendary national champion distance runners over the last 50 years it's been in existence.

Now, add Allison Kuzma to the list.

The sophomore captured the 2026 NCAA DII Indoor title in the 5,000m run with a race for the ages, breaking Hillsdale College's indoor record in the event by over 15 seconds and beating the field by nearly 19 seconds to claim her first ever national crown.

Seeded seventh entering the race, Kuzma bided her time toward the back of the pack at the start before methodically working her way through the field. She moved from 15th to ninth at the 1K mark, and with two-thirds of the race remaining, she had climbed into second place. At the front, however, 2025 NCAA DII cross country champion and heavy favorite Tristian Spence of Adams State had opened up a five second gap and appeared to be rolling to the national title.

Undeterred, Kuzma surged forward and ran Spence down, catching the 2025 NCAA DII Outdoor 5K champion and indoor 5K runner-up in just four laps and blowing past her, opening up an 18 second gap in the final 1,000 meters to run away from Spence and the field for a stunning national crown.

Kuzma's final time of 15:58.57 makes her the 11th fastest indoor women's 5,000m runner in the history of NCAA Division II according to the USTFCCCA record book, and breaks the Hillsdale College indoor 5K record of 16:13.91 set in 2016 by Hannah McIntyre by more than 15 seconds. It completes a meteoric rise for a runner that earned her first All-American honor last May in the outdoor 10K, and also received All-American honors in women's cross country this fall.

The sophomore wasn't the only Charger in action on Friday at the national championship, as additional Hillsdale athletes also competed on the track and in the field. Making her first-ever national meet appearance, freshman Anna Roessner missed making the finals of the 60m dash by just one one-hundredth of a second. Roessner finished 11th in a time of 7.47, just off the 7.46 mark it took to reach the final in a still-solid performance for a first year competitor.

Two more Chargers made their national meet debuts in the women's weight throw on Friday evening. Freshman Tori Tyo set a new personal best of 18.54 meters to place 11th, just 35 centimeters off qualifying for the final, while sophomore teammate Olivia Newsome was just behind in 13th with a throw of 18.18 meters. Tyo's throw moves her up to seventh on Hillsdale's all-time list in the women's weight throw.

Kuzma will have a chance to add more hardware to her national championship this weekend, as the sophomore races again tomorrow in the 3,000m run at 6:25 p.m. She's one of several Hillsdale College women's athletes who will compete on Saturday. Senior Tara Townsend, an 2025 outdoor All-American in the pole vault, will contend for the title in the indoor version of that event at 4 p.m. on Saturday, while Chargers sophomore Amelia Lutz and freshman Sofia Boonzaaijer will make their national meet debuts and push for All-American honors in the women's shot put as well at 5:15 p.m.
