Lutz, Townsend earn All-American honors as Charger women wrap up 2026 NCAA DII Indoor Championship

The Hillsdale College women added two more All-American finishes to a banner weekend on the final day of the 2026 NCAA DII Indoor Championships on Saturday in Virginia Beach.

Sophomore Amelia Lutz and senior Tara Townsend both placed nationally to complete a strong showing for the Chargers, who took 11th in the nation as a team.

Lutz had an excellent performance in her first ever trip to the national meet, taking fourth overall in the shot put. Her top throw of 16.01 meters was just 24 centimeters behind the winning mark of Febe Wessels of CSU-Pueblo in a tight finish in the event, and Lutz had three throws in total that were better than the fifth-place mark in the event.

The All-American honors caps an awesome sophomore season for Lutz, who shattered the Hillsdale College indoor school record in the shot put earlier in the season and is the only woman in Chargers history to throw past the 16 meter mark. With two more season of indoor eligibility left, and an outdoor campaign to look forward to in 2026, there will be plenty more opportunities for Lutz to add to her trophy case in the next couple of seasons.

Townsend, meanwhile, followed up an All-American finish in the 2025 NCAA DII Outdoor Championships by earning another spot on the podium indoors in the event. Townsend was clean over bars at 3.92 meters and 4.07 meters, and cleared 4.17 meters on her third attempt to lock up a seventh place finish and All-American honors. The senior made a great attempt at 4.27 meters that came up just short, but still moved up one spot from her outdoor finish from eighth to seventh in the nation, and snagged another All-American honor. She'll be a strong contender outdoors in 2026 as well for the Chargers.

Two other athletes competed and had solid showings on Saturday for the Chargers. Sophomore Allison Kuzma returned to the track to compete in the 3,000m run after a stunning national championship in the 5K on Friday night, but against one of the most stacked fields in the history of the event, another late rally fell short of All-American honors as Kuzma finished 13th in 9:33.57. That time was still just a couple seconds shy of Kuzma's personal best in the event as the sophomore put together another strong race to finish up the indoor season.

Freshman Sofia Boonzaaijer, meanwhile, also competed in the shot put in her first national meet appearance. Boonzaaijer, who only competed in three indoor meets this season and will preserve her redshirt, acquitted herself well in the competition. Coming into the event seeded 18th and last, Boonzaaijer moved up five spots to finish 13th in the nation, with a throw of 14.31 meters that was near her personal best in a Charger uniform. It's a strong start for an athlete that still has her whole career ahead of her, with a 2026 outdoor season and four more years after that as well.

With the indoor track season concluded, Hillsdale's women now turn their focus to the outdoor campaign, which will kick off in late March. Hillsdale is set to host the G-MAC Outdoor Championships at the end of April, and will look to use the next six weeks to set themselves up to contend for a conference championship as a team.
