The Hillsdale College softball team used a solid offensive performance to pick up two more wins on Wednesday night in Florida, beating host Florida Southern 8-5 and 5-2 in two evening contests.
Hillsdale broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the top of the fifth inning to seize control of the first contest. The Chargers punished two errors by the Mocs in the frame with four hits, including RBI singles by
Nathalie Hagle and
Maggie Olaveson and a two-run double by
Anna Chellman to go up 7-2. Hagle added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and reliever
Anistyn Foster was able to deftly maneuver her way out of two jams with runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the victory.
Taylor Lewis was 3 for 4 at the plate to lead the Chargers, while
Anna Chellman was 2 for 4 with her two-run double and
Sydney Davis added a RBI double as well for Hillsdale. Hagle finished with three RBIs, including two on sacrifice flies for the Chargers in the victory.
Foster (1-1) got the win in relief for the Chargers, striking out one and walking none in four innings of work, while
Katie Jonas pitched three innings with a strikeout and three walks as well for Hillsdale.
In the nightcap, Hillsdale jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning, as
Ronnie Craft led off the game with a single and the Chargers took advantage of an error and another sacrifice fly by
Nathalie Hagle to go up 2-0. Hillsdale would never trail in the contest on the way to a 5-2 victory, but it didn't come easily as Florida Southern had baserunners in every inning.
The Chargers turned two clutch double plays, including one in the bottom of the seventh with no outs and the tying run at the plate that preserved Hillsdale's lead. Offensively, Hillsdale took advantage of another Mocs error in the top of the second to score a third run, and added two important insurance runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run double by
Olivia Liguori.
Liguori was 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Chargers, and
Mackenzi Maxson picked up the win in relief, pitching four and two-thirds innings of scoreless softball with a strikeout and two walks. Starter
Gracelynn Kelly gave up no hits in two and a third innings of work as well.
Hillsdale improves to 12-9 with the wins and is now 5-2 on its Florida trip over spring break. The Chargers wrap up the trip on Friday in Daytona Beach with a doubleheader against host Embry-Riddle.
