The Hillsdale College softball team couldn't bring its spring break trip to Florida to a winning end on Friday night, falling to host Embry-Riddle in both halves of a doubleheader in Daytona Beach.
The Chargers battled in a tight 3-2 game in the opener. Hillsdale outhit Embry-Riddle 10-5 and twice held the lead but stranded seven runners on base and were upended by a two-run walk off single in the bottom of the seventh.
Olivia Liguori hit a home run in the top of the fourth inning to give the Chargers the edge early, and, after ERAU tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, Liguori scored again, converting a leadoff single and a stolen base in the top of sixth into the go-ahead run on an error by the Falcons.
Hillsdale couldn't hold the lead, however, as an error in the seventh inning opened the door for ERAU to plate two runs and walk off the winner. Liguori and
Ronnie Craft each had two hits to lead the Chargers in the contest, while
Mackenzi Maxson (3-3) took the loss, scattering five hits with one strikeout and two earned runs against in six and a third innings of work.
The nightcap also was a close game early, but ERAU broke things open with a three run second inning and then pulled away for good with a five-run fourth inning on the way to a 9-1 victory. Hillsdale scored its lone run in the second inning, as
Nathalie Hagle scored from third on a sacrifice fly by
Cayla Contreras after a leadoff double.
Ava Stripp had the only other base hit for the Chargers offensively, and
Emma Sather added a stolen base.
Katie Jonas (3-3) took the loss for the Chargers, pitching one and two thirds innings, with
Anistyn Foster and
Grace Harris also appearing in relief for Hillsdale.
The Chargers are now 12-11 overall and return to Michigan tomorrow, with the G-MAC opener for Hillsdale scheduled at Johnny Williams Field on Sunday. Hillsdale will play two against Lake Erie at home, with the contests starting at noon.
