The Hillsdale College men's tennis team took a tough loss on the road on Sunday afternoon, falling to a nationally ranked Northwood team 6-1 in both programs' first match of the G-MAC season.
The Timberwolves were able to build off an early edge gained by capturing a hard-fought doubles point. All three matches at 1, 2, and 3 doubles were tight, with Hillsdale's top team of
Henry Hammond and
Ellis Klanduch forcing a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles, but in the end Northwood claimed all three to go up 1-0.
In singles play, Klanduch was Hillsdale's lone winner, capturing a gritty victory at No. 4 singles by winning tiebreaks in both sets to take down Northwood's AJ Duggan.
Alex Cordero Lopez also put up a good fight for the Chargers, forcing a third set at No. 5 singles with a 6-2 second set victory before ultimately falling to Northwood's Finn Buschmaas.
Hillsdale is now 5-6 overall, 0-1 in G-MAC play and continues to face tough opponents next weekend, as the Chargers host two more title contenders and nationally-ranked teams, the 44th-ranked Findlay Oilers and the 19th-ranked Tiffin Dragons, in matches on Friday and Saturday.Â
