Chargers Haas, Kuzma named USTFCCCA Midwest Region Indoor Track Athletes of the Year

The Hillsdale College track and field team's two newest national champions added another prestigious honor on Monday afternoon.

Senior Ben Haas of the Chargers men's track and field team and sophomore Allison Kuzma of Hillsdale's women's track and field team were recognized as the top athletes in the Midwest Region for the 2025-26 Indoor Track and Field season by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Monday afternoon.

Haas was named the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Male Field Athlete of the Year for the NCAA Division II indoor campaign, becoming the first Charger to earn that distinction since Hillsdale College Hall of Famer Jason Stomps in 2010, while Kuzma was recognized as the Midwest Region Female Track Athlete of the Year indoors in NCAA DII, Hillsdale's third recipient of that award overall and first since another Hillsdale Hall of Famer, Emily Oren, in 2016.

It's a fitting cap to a historic indoor career for Haas, who won back-to-back NCAA DII indoor national titles in the weight throw the past two seasons. Haas won his second straight title on March 13 at the NCAA DII Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach with a winning throw of 22.97 meters, breaking his own school record in the event and cementing his place as the fourth-farthest weight thrower in the history of NCAA DII. On top of back-to-back national titles, Haas was a four-time NCAA DII All-American and a four-time Great Midwest Athletic Conference champion in the weight throw. As one of the best in the history of the division, Haas now heads into his final outdoor campaign this spring looking to repeat as the NCAA DII national champion in the hammer throw as well and capture a fourth national title.

For Kuzma, it's been a special campaign so far this season, building on an All-American finish outdoors in May 2025 in the 10,000m run as a freshman. At the NCAA DII Indoor Championships on March 13, Kuzma stunned the field with a dominant performance in the women's 5,000m run to capture her first national title, beating second place in the race by 18 seconds and shattering Hillsdale's school record in the event by over 15 seconds with a time of 15:58.57. Kuzma's winning performance gives her the 11th fastest 5,000m time in NCAA DII history, and comes on the heels of an All-American performance in cross country this past fall as well. For her career so far, Kuzma has back-to-back G-MAC titles in the indoor 5,000m run, the 2025 G-MAC cross country title, the 2026 G-MAC indoor 3,000m run title, and the 2025 G-MAC Outdoor 10,000m run title. Kuzma will look to build on her success this winter in the spring outdoor campaign, where she should be a national contender to win both the 10,000m and 5,000m run titles at the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships in May.
