Charger offense breaks out in 10-3 win over UMSL to open weekend series

The Hillsdale College baseball team found its groove offensively on Friday, jumping out to a big early lead and rolling to a 10-3 victory over Missouri-St. Louis to kick off a weekend series.

It was an emphatic return to form for the Chargers offense, which doubled up its entire run production from the past weekend in just nine innings in a display of force.

A hot start fueled Hillsdale's victory, as the Chargers scored in each of the first four innings to build a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Sophomore Gaard Swenson set the tone for Hillsdale by smashing a solo home run to center field to lead off the game, giving the Chargers the advantage from jump.

Aaron Jasiak hit a RBI single in the second inning and Ryan Wiehe drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the third to put the Chargers up 3-1 entering the fourth, when Hillsdale blew the game open.

Back up to bat, Jasiak doubled down the left field line and Rocco Tenuta was hit by pitch to set up first baseman Will Lehman, who blasted the ball over the left centerfield fence for a three-run home run that put the Chargers up for good.

Lehman added to Hillsdale's lead in the top of the sixth with a two-run single, and Swenson completed the scoring for Hillsdale with a RBI single in the top of the ninth.

While the Chargers' offense put up fireworks, Hillsdale also picked up the win thanks to a quality start from Jacob Pallo (1-2), who went six innings with four strikeouts and four walks to record his first victory of the season. Patrick MacLean took over in the seventh for the Chargers, pitching three scoreless innings and striking out five to finish the game and record a save.

Jasiak went 4 for 5 at the plate with a double and a stolen base to lead the Chargers offensively, while Lehman was 2 for 5 with the home run and five RBIs. Swenson chipped in three hits, including the solo home run, and a stolen base as well for the Chargers, while Nolan Coppens added a single and a double and Tenuta finished with a pair of hits as well.

The Chargers improve to 4-7 on the season and will look to carry the momentum forward to another matchup with the Tritons tomorrow. Like today's game, that contest will be played at Roy. E. Lee Field on the campus of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville due to the weather impacting conditions at Missouri-St. Louis' home field.
