Big innings help Chargers take down Davenport, 13-9

Two crooked numbers on the scoreboard helped the Hillsdale College baseball team top visiting Davenport in a 13-9 midweek contest on Wednesday evening.

The Chargers used a five-run second inning to rally from a 4-0 deficit, then pulled ahead for good with five more runs in the bottom of the fifth for Hillsdale's first win over the Panthers since 2023.

Hillsdale strung together six hits in seven at bats to lead off the bottom of the second, tying the game at 4-all before recording their first out and pulling ahead 5-4 on a sacrifice fly by Rocco Tenuta. Will Lehman chipped in a RBI double and Ryan Wiehe and Gaard Swenson each an RBI single for the Chargers, and Aaron Jasiak also drove a run home on a fielder's choice.

After Davenport tied up the game in the top of the fourth inning, Hillsdale pulled ahead for good on another sacrifice fly by Tenuta in the bottom of the fourth, then blew the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 11-5 lead and pull away.

In the fifth, Hillsdale took advantage of control issues for the Panthers, loading the bases on walks and scoring twice on a hit by pitch and a wild pitch by Davenport. Tenuta also hit a RBI single up the middle for his third RBI of the game in the frame, Gaard Swenson added a run on a sacrifice fly, and Hillsdale also scored on an error.

Davenport closed to within two runs, 11-9, in the top of the eighth, but Hillsdale got needed distance in the bottom of the eighth, scoring on another Panther error and tacking on another run on a Tyler Sowers RBI single to take a 13-9 lead to the ninth.

Working his second inning of relief, Winston Delp shook off allowing the first two runners to reach, getting a Davenport player to ground into a double play and inducing a flyout to seal the win and secure his first save of 2026.

Will Lehman went 2 for 5 with a single to lead Hillsdale, and Jake Figman, Ryan Wiehe and Billy Porotsky each added two hits as well as Hillsdale made the most of Davenport's six walks and two errors to score 13 runs on 12 hits.

Isaac Scavarda got the win in relief, pitching four innings with five strikeouts and a walk to earn his first collegiate victory. Drew Law got the start and made his first collegiate pitching appearance, striking out two and walking one in the first inning, and Collin Tobin and Nate Albanese also pitched in relief for Hillsdale in the victory.

Hillsdale improves to 12-14 with the victory heading into an important weekend series with G-MAC foe and in-state nemesis Northwood, who sits just a game behind Hillsdale in the conference standings. The two teams open with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Friday in Midland.
