Amelia Lutz already had Hillsdale's indoor school record in the women's shot put.
On Saturday, she added the outdoor record as well, part of a banner weekend that saw the Chargers sophomore reach new heights in a variety of events.
The Great Midwest Athletic Conference recognized Lutz's strong showing with the G-MAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week award on Monday afternoon. It's the second weekly conference honor of Lutz's career and her second this season as well.
Lutz dominated the Al Owens Classic hosted by Grand Valley State, posting two first place finishes and a third place finish with personal outdoor bests in all three events. The highlight was the sophomore's victory in the shot put, where Lutz shattered Hillsdale's outdoor record in the event with a throw of 16.27 meters, nearly three quarters of a meter further than the old record of 15.54 meters set by Nikita Maines in 2022. It's the second farthest outdoor shot put throw in G-MAC history and the second best mark outdoors this season, though it is short of the indoor record Lutz set in the shot put this winter of 16.42 meters when the indoor All-American first showed her talent in the event.
Along with that shot put mark, Lutz also took first in the discus with a personal best mark of 45.86 meters, the fifth-best mark all-time in the discus in program history and also a provisional mark ranking 40th in NCAA DII. She also placed third in the hammer throw with a provisional qualifying mark of 53.56 meters, ranking 25th in NCAA DII and ninth all-time in Hillsdale College history in that event as well.
Lutz looks like a potential G-MAC title contender in all three events, ranking first in the conference in the shot put and third in both the discus and hammer currently. She'll look to set more records this weekend as the Chargers host the 56th annual GINA Relays out at Hayden Park on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
