Playing in its final two home games of the season on Friday, the Hillsdale College softball team broke a program record and accomplished something that hadn't been done since 1990 with a dominant sweep of visiting Walsh.
Hillsdale rolled to 12-0 and 8-0 victories over the Cavaliers, both in five innings, to improve to 12-0 at Johnny Williams Field on the year. It's the first time a Chargers team has gone undefeated at home since the 1990 squad put up a 13-0 record at Johnny Williams Field 36 years ago.
The Chargers offense, one of the top in the G-MAC this season, kept rolling with a strong showing against Walsh. Hillsdale rode a pair of six-run innings in the first game to a 12-0 victory, making Walsh pay dearly for a two-out error in the bottom of the first with a RBI single from
Maggie Olaveson, a bases-loaded walk and a grand slam by
Anna Chellman to get the Chargers a big early lead.
Hillsdale put the game away in the bottom of the fourth, triggering the run-rule with six more runs, including a two-run single by
Sydney Davis and a three-run home run by
Olivia Liguori.
Liguori and Chelllman each finished with two hits, including their home runs, and a total of seven RBIs for the Chargers in the win.
On the mound,
Mackenzi Maxson (10-6) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and finished with the shutout, striking out three, walking one and giving up just two hits in the circle for the Chargers.
Liguori and Chellman's bombs tied the Hillsdale single-season record for home runs, jointly held by the 2021 and 2024 squads at 37.Â
In the nightcap, Hillsdale again got out to an early lead, going up 2-0 in the first on a sacrifice fly by Olaveson and a RBI single by Liguori in the first inning, and added another run on a RBI single by Davis in the second inning.
A thunderstorm forced a long weather delay before the bottom of the third inning, and after the wait the Chargers got right back to work. On back-to-back at bats immediately coming out of the delay, both Olaveson and Liguori went yard, with Olaveson hitting a solo shot to right field and Liguori following that with a home run to left center on the very next pitch, surpassing the old record and giving Hillsdale a G-MAC-leading 39 bombs on the season.
Leading 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Hillsdale ended the game early for the second time on the day, as
Ronnie Craft hit a RBI single to center field and
Emma Sather stole home on a first-and-third play for the walk-off run.
Sather's steal was her third stolen base of the day, and gives her 75 for her career, moving her into second place all-time on Hillsdale's career stolen base list.Â
Craft was a force at the plate for the Chargers in the nightcap, going 3 for 4 with a double, a stolen base and two RBIs, while Liguori stayed hot with a 3 for 3 game that included her solo home run.Â
Katie Jonas (8-4) got the complete-game shut out on the mound for the Chargers, like Maxson taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning and finishing the contest with three strikeouts, one walk and just one hit conceded.
Hillsdale is now 29-16 overall and 17-5 in G-MAC play. The Chargers are in a three-way tie for third place entering the final doubleheader of the regular season, and will make a trip to Ashland on Sunday with a chance to overtake the 16-4 Eagles in the standings with a sweep. Hillsdale still has a shot at a share of the G-MAC title, with Tiffin two games ahead at 17-3 with four left for the Dragons to play. If Tiffin slips up, a sweep of Ashland could give Hillsdale a piece of the crown.
