The Hillsdale College softball team fell on the road in two tight games at Ashland to close out the regular season on Sunday.
Hillsdale couldn't get its offense going in the opener, managing just one hit, a single by
Emma Sather in the sixth, in a 2-0 shutout loss. Ashland, meanwhile, took a lead in the top of the first and added an insurance run in the top of the fourth to claim victory.
Mackenzi Maxson (10-7) was the hard-luck loser in game one for the Chargers despite a solid performance in the circle, striking out five, walking one and holding Ashland to just two run in seven innings.
In the nightcap, Hillsdale clawed its way back from a 5-0 deficit after an error-plagued first inning, but couldn't come through with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh in a 7-6 loss.
Ronnie Craft was 3 of 5 at the plate with three stolen bases in the nightcap and got Hillsdale's dormant offense going in the third, with a leadoff single and stolen base that got her in position to score on a RBI double by
Sydney Davis. Davis later stole home in the inning to cut the deficit to 5-2, and the Chargers'
Ava Stripp also stole home in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-3 as strong baserunning kept Hillsdale in the game.Â
Anna Chellman tied up the contest for the Chargers with a two-run double in the fifth, but Ashland pulled back out in front with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead.
Hillsdale made one more charge in the top of the seventh, as Davis hit a RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-6, but with multiple runners in scoring position, the Chargers couldn't find the hit they needed to pull ahead before the third out.
Along with Craft's offensive performance, Davis, Chellman and
Maggie Olaveson each finished with a single and a double in the loss, and
Medleigh Danchak was 2 for 3 with a triple.
Grace Harris (8-6)Â took the loss in relief for Hillsdale, striking out three and walking two in five and two thirds innings after replacing starter
Katie Jonas.
Hillsdale finishes the regular season at 29-18 overall, 17-7 in G-MAC play, and will look to make a run in the G-MAC Tournament starting next Wednesday. The Chargers are the defending G-MAC Tourney champs and will be the fifth seed in this year's edition, facing off against either Ashland or Findlay in the first round on Wednesday at Firestone Stadium in Akron. The full bracket will be announced later tonight.
