Rocco Tenuta's three-run home run capped a big fifth inning for the Hillsdale College baseball team, as the Chargers clinched a return trip to the G-MAC Tournament with a 5-2 win over visiting Tiffin on Sunday.
Tenuta's blast to left field was part of a four-run inning for the Chargers, who overcame an early 2-0 deficit to take the series with the Dragons and improve to 21-24 overall and 15-13 in G-MAC play.
Tiffin managed just one hit through the first five innings but that one hit, a two-run double in the top of the third, allowed the Dragons to take the lead early in the contest.
Hillsdale got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, as
Will Lehman led off the inning with a single and later beat out the catcher's tag at home plate to score on a fielder's choice for the Chargers' first run of the game.
With one out in the top of the fifth,
Aaron Jasiak was hit by a pitch and
Gaard Swenson followed up with a single, bringing Tenuta up to the plate.
On a 1-2 count, Tenuta hit a no doubter that easily cleared the left field fence and put the Chargers ahead for good. Lehman scored again later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by
Jake Figman to give Hillsdale a 5-2 lead it would hold the rest of the way.
Logan McLaughlin (3-3) had an excellent start on the mound for the Chargers, going seven innings with six strikeouts and three walks and staying out of trouble outside of that one two-run double.
Hayden Hoffpauir struck out two of the three batters he faced in a scoreless eighth inning in relief for Hillsdale, and
Josh Novak picked up his fifth save of the season with a scoreless, hitless ninth inning as well.
Lehman was 2 for 4 with a double and catcher Ryan Wieh added two hits and a RBI as well to lead the Chargers at the plate.
As the Chargers' home finale, Sunday also was senior day for Hillsdale, and the Chargers paid tribute to graduating seniors
Tyler Turner and
Patrick MacLean in a pregame ceremony.
With the victory, Hillsdale improves to 21-24 overall, 15-13 in the G-MAC. Now safely in the G-MAC Tourney, Hillsdale currently holds the five seed in the tournament, and can potentially move into the fourth seed with a strong final weekend at Ashland this coming Friday. Hillsdale plays a four game set against the Eagles, starting with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Friday.
