The Hillsdale College women's track and field put on a show on their home track to kick off the G-MAC Outdoor Championships on Wednesday.
The Chargers won all three contested events with finals on the first day of the conference meet at the Jim and Sallie McGinnis Track and Field Facility, scoring massive points to take a sizable lead in the team race into the second day of competition on Thursday.
Hillsdale's impressive showing started in the throws, as Chargers sophomore
Amelia Lutz threw a new personal best to stun the defending champion from Ashland and take home the G-MAC title in the hammer throw.Â
Lutz' throw of 56.49 meters on her final attempt sealed the crown and Lutz's first-ever G-MAC title as a Hillsdale athlete. The mark also makes Lutz the fifth-best hammer thrower in Hillsdale College women's track and field history, and is a NCAA DII Provisional qualifying mark that moves Lutz into 11th in the nation and solidifies her spot in the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships in a second event.
Hillsdale also got solid points in the hammer throw from
Olivia Newsome, who placed fourth with a personal best mark of 52.88 meters that moves her into 10th all-time in program history.
The Chargers' excellent performances continued into the women's javelin, where a pair of Hillsdale freshmen finished 1-2.
Lilly Grubbs got the victory in tough weather conditions, with a throw of 39.38 meters that held up through the final two rounds. Teammate
Devan Foster was close behind in second with a throw of 38.69 meters as the Chargers continued their javelin dominance of the conference with a fifth title in the event in the last six seasons.
Regan Wight took fourth in the javelin as well with a personal best throw of 33.63 meters, and
Ella Schafer also PRed with a throw of 30.67 meters to take eighth and score a point for the Chargers.
Hillsdale finished the night with a strong showing in the women's 10K. Defending women's champion
Allison Kuzma rolled to a repeat title by over 20 seconds, crossing the line 34:59.58 to win the event for a second straight year, while teammate
Eleanor Clark came in third in an excellent race, finishing in 36:14.84 and moving into eighth all-time in Hillsdale College women's history in that event.
The Chargers also laid the groundwork for a big day in the women's heptathlon, with three athletes in position to score through four of the seven events on day one.
Baelyn Zitzmann leads the way with 2,918 points, having posted the top mark in both the high jump (1.63 meters) and the 200m dash (26.16) and the second-best mark in the 100m hurdles (14.92). Freshman
Bristol Whitley sits in sixth with 2,620 points and
Aubrie Wilson in eighth with 2,185 points as well for Hillsdale, with the final three events in the heptathlon to be contested on Thursday morning.
Thanks to a strong first day, Hillsdale has 55 points in the bank, leading the team standings over current second-place Ashland by 27 points. The Chargers will look to continue their momentum on Thursday, the second day of the competition, with several more championships to be handed out in action back at Hayden Park.
