The Michigan Tech University men's basketball team started hot and didn't cool off much in earning a 78-67 win over the host Hillsdale College Chargers Thursday night at Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena.
The loss, Hillsdale's fourth in a row, puts the team at 8-7 overall and 6-5 in the GLIAC. The Chargers are back home Saturday afternoon taking on Northern Michigan University.
MTU shot 53 percent from the field in the first half, jumping out to a 40-29 halftime lead. Not only did the Huskies bury six 3-point field goals in the first half, their spacing and ball movement led to a number of mid-range jumpers, many of which bounced around the rim and fell through the net.
This game matched up the GLIAC's two leading scorers - Michigan Tech's Ben Stelzer and Hillsdale's Kyle Cooper. Stelzer was on target, leading all scorers with 19 points on 5-for-7 shooting from 3-point range. Cooper had 18 points, 15 rebounds and 2 blocked shots, going 8-for-14 from the field.
The Huskies got more balanced scoring, with four players in double figures. Stedman Lowry was the only other Charger to hit that spot, finishing with 14, making four 3-point buckets in the game.
MTU also enjoyed a 35-27 edge on the boards in an otherwise cleanly played game. There were a total of 17 turnovers committed combined by the two teams, and they combined to shoot 22-for-25 from the free throw line.
Junior guard Zach Miller dished out 10 assists for Hillsdale.
