The Hillsdale College men's basketball team was unable to dig out from a 21-0 hole in suffering its first loss of the 2015-16 season Wednesday night.
The Chargers lost a battle of unbeatens with Ashland University 74-53 at the Kates Gymnasium in Ohio. Hillsdale falls to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the GLIAC, while the 18th-ranked Eagles are now 8-0 on the season.
The first half of this game could not have gone any worse for the Chargers, who missed their first seven shots of the game, while watching Ashland go 9 for 11 from the floor in the game's first six minutes. Although the score between the teams was even in the final 34 minutes, 21-0 leads and runs are difficult to overcome in basketball.
Ashland shot 11-for-23 from 3-point territory, a stat that is deceiving because the Eagles missed their last five shots from beyond the arc, a stretch that came after the game was well in hand. On the other side, Hillsdale went 3-for-16 from 3-point land, resulting in a 33-9 edge for Ashland in that aspect of the game.
The Eagles also enjoyed a huge 37-23 edge on the boards, Hillsdale's season-low for rebounds in a game as well as its biggest single-game rebounding deficit of the season.
Sophomore guard Stedman Lowry led Hillsdale with 18 points, shooting an effective 7-for-12 from the floor, making two 3-point shots. Senior Kyle Cooper had 13 points and 4 rebounds, while freshman guard Nate Neveau had 7 points.
