SATURDAY RECAP
Friday night saw senior Joshua Mirth finish off his indoor track career with an All-American honor. Saturday, it was the freshmens' turn.
Freshman Jared Schipper became the program's highest-ever finisher in the pole vault at the NCAA championships, finishing as the national runner-up, clearing a height of 5.05 meters (16 feet, 6 3/4 inches), which is also a school record. He finished four inches behind the national champion from Sioux Falls.
Freshman Lane White finished in fourth place in the 400 meter dash, joining Schipper as an All-American in his first try. White improved upon his prelim time, finishing the race in 47.64 seconds. He also placed fourth in Friday's prelims.
Hillsdale finished 14th in the nation as a team with 18 total points. Thirteen of those points came from the freshman combo of White and Schipper, indicating an enormously bright future for the program.
Hillsdale's 4x400 relay team finished 10th overall in Saturday's final race.
FRIDAY RECAP
Senior Joshua Mirth needs more room on his trophy shelf.
The highly accomplished distance runner added another All-American honor to his distinguished career Friday night, when he placed fourth in the 5000 meter run at the NCAA Division II championships, being held in Birmingham, Alabama this weekend.
Mirth finished the race in 14:29.27. He finished just .15 seconds out of third place in the race. Runners from the Midwest Region (GLIAC and GLVC) swept the top six spots in this race overall at the national championships.
Mirth adds another national honor to a resume that includes All-American recognition in cross country back in the fall.
Saturday, Mirth placed 10th overall in the 3000 meter run, clocking a time of 8:17.69.
