Basketball season came to a close for Hillsdale College in the great white north Wednesday night.
The Charger women's basketball team fell behind 11-0 and were never able to recover in a 67-49 loss to No. 9 Michigan Tech University in the quarterfinals of the 2015 GLIAC Tournament. MTU is 25-2 while Hillsdale's season ends with a 15-12 overall record.
The Huskies are a very tough team to beat in their own gym, and got off to the kind of start they're known for. A Morgan Blair running layup put Hillsdale on the board, but not before it faced an 11-point deficit within the game's first three minutes. The lead grew to 19 in the first half, but Hillsdale closed the half strong, cutting the deficit to 13, 35-22.
One issue that plagued the Chargers in the opening half was turnovers. Hillsdale committed 10 compared to four by Michigan Tech, and the Huskies had a 12-1 edge in points off turnovers in the game's opening 20 minutes.
The Huskies pulled away further to start the second half, when they started cooking from 3-point land, extending the lead beyond Hillsdale's reach.
Playing the final game in what has been an off-the-charts career, senior Megan Fogt finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds. She wrapped up her career with 1,003 rebounds, becoming just the second player in school history to crack four figures in career rebounds. Her success, on the court and in the classroom (two-time Academic All-American) have set a standard that will be high for players to reach for many years into the future.
Blair and junior Kelsey Cromer each had 8 points for Hillsdale.
The Chargers shot 2-for-14 from 3-point land, compared to 6-for-17 for Michigan Tech. The Huskies outrebounded the Chargers 36-30, taking away what had been Hillsdale's biggest team strength of the season. Hillsdale shot 35 percent from the floor in the game, while MTU hit on 47 percent of its shots.
