Three members of the Hillsdale College women's tennis team made their collegiate debuts Saturday afternoon in the Margot V. Biermann Center. Three members of the team had very successful debuts for the Chargers.
Hillsdale earned an 8-1 win over Walsh University in the 2015-16 season opener. The Chargers are back in action at home at 1:00 Sunday against Ashland.
Saturday's matches started outdoors, but heavy rains forced the action indoors into the Biermann Center. No big adjustments were needed by Hillsdale's talented young players, who all played with confidence and skill in their first matches wearing Charger blue.
Freshman Halle Hyman made her debut at No. 1 singles and posted a 6-4, 6-2 win. Hyman teamed up with fellow rookie Julia Formentin for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles as well.
Formetin made her singles debut in the No. 6 flight and went on to win 6-0, 6-3. Freshman Corinne prost also notched a straight-sets win, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
The team's veterans also turned in strong performances to open the new season. Seniors Sydney Delp and Lindsay peirce gutted out a tough 9-8 (4) win at No. 1 doubles, by far the longest match of the doubles flight. Junior Dana Grace Buck and Prost joined forces at No. 3 doubles for an 8-2 win.
