Chargers have three undefeated finishes at Davenport Invite

The Hillsdale College women's tennis team continued a strong start to the season with a solid showing at an invitational hosted by Davenport on Friday and Saturday in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Every one of Hillsdale's nine players that took the court won at least one match, and two Chargers singles players and one doubles pairing went undefeated on the weekend.

Hillsdale's top doubles pairing of senior Ane Dannhauser and junior Briana Rees rolled to three victories to capture the A doubles flight title, winning 8-6 and 8-4 over a pair of teams from host Davenport and 8-2 over a squad from Northwood. As a team, Dannhauser and Rees spent virtually all of the 2025-26 season nationally and ranked, and look to be a team capable of capturing national attention once again in 2026-27.

Dannhauser won two of three singles matches in the A bracket as well, beating Purdue Northwest's Isabella Array 6-1, 6-1 and Davenport's Sienna Opray 6-2, 7-5. Rees also picked up a singles win in the A draw with a hard-fought 7-5, 5-7, 10-7 victory over Northwood's Valeria Amorocho.

Down the lineup, the Chargers dominated the D singles bracket, with junior Emma Palus and sophomore Sydney Singh each winning all three of their matches to split the crown. Palus beat Arianna Kinney of Northwood 6-3, 6-2, Andrea Bilden of Davenport 6-2, 6-3, and Angelica Montano of Davenport 6-0, 6-1, while Singh won in three sets against Bilden, 2-6, 6-4, 10-6, beat Kinney 6-3, 6-4 and also triumphed over Rishita Agarwal 6-2, 6-2. Palus also won two of three matches in the B doubles flight with partner Julia Zlateva, winning two tiebreaks to beat teams from Northwood and Davenport, while Singh also picked up a pair of victories with her partner in B doubles, 8-2 over Purdue Northwest and 8-4 over Northwood.

Zlateva was one of three Chargers players to finish 2-1 in the C singles draw, with wins over Addison Lind of Davenport (6-4, 6-3) and Alice Maccani of Davenport (6-2, 6-0). Freshman Addison Trotter made the final of the C singles draw with wins over Lind (6-4, 6-2) and Elene Churruca of Northwood (6-1, 6-4), while Hillsdale sophomore Dimitra Papastavrou also picked up wins over Maccani (6-1, 6-2) and Churruca (6-3, 6-4) as well.

In B singles for the Chargers, sophomore Esther Sura got a victory over Bridgette Gomez of Northwood 6-4, 6-4, and freshman Emily Muresan won a 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory over Lavinia Bortolaso of Purdue Northwest.

Muresan and Trotter teamed up in A doubles as well for the Chargers, picking up wins over two teams from Purdue Northwest, 8-4 and 8-2, and Papastavrou and Sura earned wins in B doubles as a team over pairings from Purdue Northwest (8-2) and Davenport (8-3).

It's been an auspicious start to the 2026-27 campaign for the Chargers, who will next compete two weekends from now at the ITA Midwest Regional back in Grand Rapids, beginning on Oct. 10. The cornerstone of the fall schedule for the Chargers, the ITA Midwest Regional will bring together all the top players in the region to compete in singles and doubles brackets, with a berth to the ITA Cup, the de facto singles and doubles national championship on the line for high-finishing players and teams.
