A tough three weeks of preseason preparation paid off Saturday afternoon for the Hillsdale College women's tennis team.
The Chargers were well-conditioned and in prime shape for their 2016 season opener, and it showed in a 6-3 victory over Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio.
Freshman Kamryn Matthews, a state champion Charger at Midland Dow High School, got her Hillsdale College Charger career off to a winning start, earning two wins for Hillsdale in her collegiate debut. She blanked her opponent in each set, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. She then teamed up with senior captain Jada Bissett on an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Fellow freshman Katie Bell was also a two-time winner in her first action at the college level. At No. 2 doubles, she joined forces with sophomore Corinne Prost to post an 8-2 victory. Bell was slotted in at No. 2 singles to start her career, and proved her worth by winning a 7-5, 6-3 decision.
Senior captain Dana Grace Buck won a hard-fought 7-5, 6-2 match at No. 4 singles, and sophomore Madeline Bissett won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
