Impressive Sunday Sweep for Charger Softball Team

Box Score 1

Game 1 box score: Hillsdale 1, Ferris State 0

Game 2 box score: Hillsdale 10, Ferris State 2 (6 inn.)

Two wins of very different types were achieved by the Hillsdale College softball team Sunday afternoon.

A Haley Lawrence bases-loaded single proved to be a walk-off winner in the team's 1-0 victory over Ferris State University. Game two was not as dramatic, as the Chargers bulldozed their way to a 10-2 win in six innings.

Hillsdale is now 15-16 overall and 5-3 in the GLIAC after the sweep, and are riding a three-game winning streak.

The first game remained scoreless through the first six innings. Weidinger allowed only 2 hits and struck out 4, while Ferris State pitcher Sam Bates kept Hillsdale's bats at bay. In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Victoria Addis led off with a single to shallow right field and was moved around by sophomore Katie Kish and freshman Sam Catron. Sophomore Amanda Marra was intentionally walked to load the bases. Junior Haley Lawrence came up with a walk-off hit to score Addis and win the game 1-0.

The Chargers jumped ahead 3-0 in the top of the first inning of the second game. Senior Cassie Asselta led off reaching on a hit by pitch. Senior Bekah Kastning followed with a single and junior Kelsey Gockman scored 2 with a double. Gockman later stole third base and scored on a throwing error on the play.

Hillsdale extended the lead in the top of the second to bring the score to 7-0. Sophomore Amanda Marra and freshman Shelby Sprouse each singled to start the inning. Jessica Taylor moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Kastning doubled to score both Marra and Sprouse. Gockman followed with another double to score Kastning and was scored by a triple from Addis.

In the top of the fourth, the Chargers jumped ahead 9-0 as Asselta and Gockman each singled and were scored by Addis and Kish. The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Chargers added a run in the sixth inning to win 10-2, applying the mercy rule.

Weidinger stepped to the mound again in the second game, not allowing a run on the day until the bottom of the fourth inning. She added three strikeouts, allowing only four hits in the nightcap.
