Season Recap: Record-setting offense helps Chargers to sixth-straight 30-plus win season

Prior to the 2026 season, standout pitching had been the name of the game for the Hillsdale College softball team, as All-Conference and All-Region pitchers Dana Weidinger, Joni Russell and Erin Kapteyn helped the Chargers to an unprecedented five straight seasons of 30-plus wins.

With those past stars having graduated, and an inexperienced and developing pitching staff in 2026, the Chargers had to find a different formula to keep the streak going. The answer was a record-setting offensive explosion that propelled the Chargers to another standout campaign.

As a team, Hillsdale put together its best offensive season in program history on the way to a 32-20 record in 2026, setting five team single season records and finishing second or third all-time in three more categories. The Chargers set new marks in hits (479), runs scored (327), doubles (98) and RBIs (292) while obliterating the team single-season home run record with 48 in the campaign, while also hitting .330 (second all-time) with 104 stolen bases (also second).

The Chargers started the season in Texas with a program highlight, stunning host and defending NCAA DII national champion Texas-Tyler 4-1 on Feb. 6 in the season opener. That was one of a few big non-conference wins for Hillsdale, which also split with NCAA DII runner-up Tampa, giving the Chargers wins over both of the 2025 NCAA DII World Series finalists, as well as earning a 7-4 victory over perennial NCAA DII regional qualifier and old foe Lewis in Florida.

Hillsdale used its home run prowess to get off to an 8-0 start in conference play, tying the team's single-game long ball record with four in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Northwood, and setting a new all-time top mark with five home runs in game two of another doubleheader sweep of Cedarville. In a very competitive and tightly-contested G-MAC title race, Hillsdale stayed in the hunt until the final day, thanks in part to a 12-0 record at home, the first time the Chargers had gone unbeaten at Johnny Williams Field since 1990.

As a fifth seed in the G-MAC Tournament, Hillsdale made a spirited run through the elimination bracket, knocking out the top two seeds, ending Cedarville and Ohio Dominican's seasons, and eliminating G-MAC regular season champion Tiffin from the tournament. The Chargers' run came up one game short of the final, as a late grand slam by Ashland allowed the Eagles to pull out a 6-5 nailbiter.

Hillsdale's offense was powered by contributions up and down the lineup, with all nine regulars hitting .279 or better and seven players hitting .309 or better. Seniors Taylor Lewis and Maggie Olaveson wrapped up legendary careers with strong final seasons, as Lewis leaves Hillsdale in the top 10 in seven offensive categories, and Olaveson departs ranking 10th or better in six categories. Fellow senior Emma Sather also finished strong, ending her career second all-time in Hillsdale history with 77 stolen bases, while multi-year starter Anna Chellman was a major contributor at third base as well.

While the Chargers will miss their four senior stalwarts, the emergence of young talent means Hillsdale's offense should remain potent into the future. Sophomore Ronnie Craft was the breakout star of 2026, setting the program record for stolen bases with 37 while leading the G-MAC in batting average with .447. Fellow sophomore Olivia Liguori hit 10 home runs and was a first-team All-G-MAC honoree along with Craft and Lewis, while sophomore Nathalie Hagle and juniors Sydney Davis and Medleigh Danchak each earned second team honors. With those five returning for 2027, the Chargers are well-positioned.

In the circle, senior Mackenzi Maxson developed into a real ace for the Chargers over the course of the season, shutting out Tampa and finishing the year with the team's top ERA and 12 victories. Freshman Katie Jonas and sophomore Grace Harris got valuable experience and with further development should form the core of the 2027 staff along with sophomore Anistyn Foster.
