Kastning Sets Hits Record on Senior Day

Box Score 1

Game 1 box score: Ohio Dominican 4, Hillsdale 1

Game 2 box score: Hillsdale 9, Ohio Dominican 3

On Senior Day, one of Hillsdale College's best ever wrote her name into the record books.

Senior outfielder Bekah Kastning set the school's single-season hits record as the Chargers split a GLIAC doubleheader with Ohio Dominican University in the final home games of the 2017 season. Hillsdale lost game 1 4-1, but came back to win the nightcap 9-3.

The Chargers are now 25-20 overall and 13-7 in the GLIAC.

Kastning had two hits in game 1, and her bunt single in the first inning game 2 gave her 77 hits on the season, breaking a school record that had stood since 1995. She still leads the GLIAC in batting average, maintaining an unbelievable final season.

The Hillsdale bats didn't get many clean hits in the opener, as the Panthers shut down the Chargers offensively. Kastning, Kelsey Gockman and Katie Kish each had two hits in game 1 and Kish scored the team's lone run.

The team got off to a much better start in game 2, scoring three times in the top of the first inning to grab a quick early lead. Sam Catron's two-run single helped jump-start the offense.

Hillsdale held a 5-0 lead when ODU hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to suddenly make it a 5-3 game. But the Chargers responded with four big runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Freshman Sydney San Juan singled with the bases loaded to score one, and freshman Shelby Sprouse followed with a three-run double to center that cleared the bases and put a big exclamation point on the team's win.

Sprouse was 2-for-4 with a career-high 4 RBI in the win for Hillsdale. San Juan and Catron each had two hits and two runs batted in, while Amanda Marra was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one batted in.

Freshman pitcher Dana Weidinger won her 17th game of the season, going all seven innings with one strikeout.
